Starving and nearly frozen to death, Charles tried to grab something to eat by night, sneaking in the kitchen, but here Cheeseman, Barrow and Skinner intercepted him, and started torturing him. Having a ghost as a headmaster was quite problematic, mainly because he forgot to feed the only living student he had, as neither he nor the other students required eating anymore also, the activities were pretty dangerous: one day, Parkinson sent all his students, Charles included, to bathe in the school pond… without any consideration for the water temperature, since it was freezing outside but ghosts didn’t feel the cold. Apparently they had learnt nothing during their decades in Hell, and since Charles was the only living student in the school, the only one capable of feeling pain, he was the perfect target for their cruelty. There were also several students, but Charles was worried by three of them in particular: Cheeseman, Barrow and Skinner, three violent bullies who had come back to the land of the living with the same thirst for inflicting pain they had when they were alive. The headmaster disappeared, haunted by the ghost of his sadomasochistic mother, and a new (old?) one took his place, the cruel Headmaster Parkinson, who had died in 1916 but was ready to work again.
Then, suddenly, the school became crowded: Charles couldn’t know it, but Lucifer had abandoned Hell, and he had let loose all the damned souls within it… some of which had just come back to their old school. With no other student around, the only company the boy had was that of the headmaster, and of one of the teachers, old Miss Gribble: it didn’t come by surprise that Charles preferred to spend all his time alone in the library. As his father was sent to Kuwait, however, for the first time he couldn’t make it back home for holidays, so Charles, who didn’t have any other relative he could spend the holidays with, stayed at school. Hilarion’s School for Boys, where he distinguished himself for his grades and his discipline. Since his dad couldn’t be with him all the time, as he was often abroad on missions, Charles was usually entrusted to boarding schools, with his father coming back just in time to spend the holidays with him. This is already a major departure from his comicbook counterpart, whose death was… let’s say creepier. A “young” ghost compared to his colleague Edwin Paine, Charles is introduced as the “muscle” of the group, able to conjure any kind of (spiritual?) weapon, and we also learn he died of hypothermia in a lake while stoned by some bullies.
